Background of the study
Health-seeking behavior among rural women is influenced by a myriad of factors, including socio-cultural norms, economic status, and accessibility of healthcare services. In Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area, rural women often rely on traditional practices and face significant barriers to accessing modern health services. These barriers include limited transportation, low health literacy, and financial constraints, which collectively contribute to delayed treatment and poorer health outcomes (Ekpo, 2023). Recent studies emphasize that understanding the determinants of health-seeking behavior is crucial for designing interventions that improve healthcare access and utilization among rural populations (Udo, 2024). Community-based programs aimed at enhancing health literacy and addressing cultural barriers have shown promise in modifying health-seeking behavior and improving overall well-being (Bassey, 2025). This study investigates the factors influencing health-seeking behavior among rural women to inform targeted health policies and interventions.

Statement of the problem
Rural women in Ikot Ekpene face significant challenges in accessing healthcare due to socio-cultural, economic, and infrastructural barriers. These challenges result in delays in seeking appropriate medical care, thereby adversely affecting their health outcomes. The lack of effective interventions to address these barriers necessitates a focused study on understanding the determinants of health-seeking behavior among this group (Ekpo, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To examine factors influencing health-seeking behavior among rural women.

  2. To assess the impact of socio-cultural and economic barriers on healthcare access.

  3. To propose strategies for improving health service utilization.

Research questions:

  1. What factors influence the health-seeking behavior of rural women?

  2. How do socio-cultural and economic barriers affect healthcare access?

  3. What interventions can improve healthcare utilization among rural women?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Socio-cultural factors significantly influence rural women’s health-seeking behavior.

  2. Economic constraints hinder timely healthcare access.

  3. Community-based interventions can improve health service utilization.

Significance of the study
This study provides vital insights into the determinants of health-seeking behavior among rural women, informing the development of targeted interventions. The findings will assist policymakers and healthcare providers in designing programs that address barriers and enhance healthcare access, ultimately improving health outcomes for rural women in Ikot Ekpene.

Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to the study of health-seeking behavior among rural women in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State.

Definitions of terms:

  1. Health-Seeking Behavior: Actions undertaken by individuals to obtain health services.

  2. Rural Women: Women residing in non-urban areas.

  3. Health Literacy: The ability to access, understand, and use health information.
